The main respondent is a 16 year old Kurdish boy from Syria. He was trying to cross the border Turkey-Bulgaria to then go to Germany. On the 24/12/2024, the respondent, together with his friends, was taken to Harmanli gendarmerie station at 1am. At 7am, a Syrian translator came to the police station and, during the interview that lasted 5 hours, the translator said to him “you son of the bitch” and she cursed at them the entire time (The respondejt says that the translator was the one cursing at them, she was not translating any curse from the policemen since they were very calm).
On the same day, at 11pm he was taken to Lyubimets detention centre. He says that made his stay there for 24 days. On the 12/01/2024, he was taken to do an interview before leaving the detention camp. The mediator there translated for him what the police told him, namely if he would not claim asylum, they would have give him six months in Lyubimets and then deport him to Syria. For this reason, he claimed asylum in Bulgaria.
So, he never reached any reception camp, only after the detention he was taken to a reception centre, namely Banya camp. In the camp, there was a mediator that asked him if he has any close relatives in EU countries. He has a sister that lives in Sweden and for this reason they asked for him family reunification, since he is a minor. Up to this day, he is waiting an answer from the family reunification process and his process for asylum status is put on hold because of this.
