From Croatia to Bosnia,

The main respondent is a 50 years old man from Morocco who has been in Bosnia for the past eight years. On the 26th of May 2025, he attempted to cross the border from Bosnia into Croatia together with another man from Morocco (32 yo). They had started walking, from the area of Velika Kladuša, through the forest in the early afternoon, around 3:00 PM, hoping to cross without being detected. They were trying to cross an exposed street when the police caught them, approximately two kilometers from the Croatian border.
Area where the police caught them
At around 5:00 PM, while crossing a village road in a mountainous area (Croatia), the two men were intercepted by three Croatian police officers. The officers were part of the regular police force and were armed with standard pistols. They arrived in a vehicle, although no specific details about the car were provided. When the main respondent saw the police, he tried to run away, while the other man stopped and remained where he was. Two of the police officers stayed with his friend, while the third officer chased after the main respondent. When the officer caught up with him, the main respondent tried to speak in Bosnian, as the police did not speak English. However, instead of responding, the officer immediately resorted to violence.According to the main respondent, the police officers forcefully pressed his face to the ground using his boot, causing a tooth to fall out and resulting in serious injuries to his mouth and inner lip. He was also beaten across the face and back, sustaining multiple injuries. After that the officers confiscated all of their belongings, including money, phones, backpacks, clothes, and even their shoes, leaving them with nothing.
After the assault, the police forced the men to walk back across the border into Bosnia on foot, as they were very close to it. No transportation or medical assistance was provided. Despite his injuries, the main respondent had no choice but to walk through the forest terrain to return to safety. The men eventually made their way back, physically hurt and without any of their personal belongings.
