They beat us up to kill us

The main respondent is a 27-year-old man for Morocco. The respondent reports that after crossing the border from North Macedonia, from Kumonovo camp, 10 kilometres away from Serbia and being pushed-back without violence by Serbian police, the respondent attempted another time. According to the respondent, on the 21st of December 2023, he was travelling with his friend, a 25-year-old man from Morocco. He reports that they walked for two days and about 100 kilometres before being apprehended by some uniformed men in a military car. The respondent states that no violence was exerted against them at that time. The respondent reports that after being driven away for what have seemed to be 5 minutes, he and his friend were picked up by a civilian car with two men dressed in uniforms who carried on the push-back. According to the respondent, one of them was wearing a face-cover mask and the other not. Based on the description, one of the individuals could be a member of the Serbian National Police, considering the blue uniform, and the other one could be from the Serbian Border Police, due to the face-mask. The respondent states that they drove them through a national road for about 10 to 20 minutes. He reports that they were brought close to a river, right next to the border with Bulgaria, close to this national road.
The respondent claims that the two officers forced them to undress, took their shoes, socks, coats and clothes. He claims that they also took all of the personal belongings of the respondent and his friend, which included: money, food, water, backpack and sleeping bag. According to him, the officers broke all of the electronic devices such as the phones and the power bank. The respondent, who knows a bit of Serbian, reports that the authorities were insulting them and their families. The respondent recalls the officers starting beating them up with batons, aiming at the articulations: hips, knees, ankles. “They did not beat us up to beat us up, but to kill us”. The respondent reports getting bruises all over his legs and a broken bone on his upper left leg. According to him, the officers then pushed the respondent and his friend into the river. He claims that the police officers told them to go to Bulgaria. The respondent states that he tried to explain to the officers that he and his friend have been fingerprinted in Greece and were staying in an open camp in Macedonia. According to him, the Serbian officer refused to take into consideration these information and told them to go to Bulgaria.
The respondent reports that they walked about 15km to reach the first village in Bulgaria where they talked to Border police officers. They had been brought to a detention centre in Sofia without violence and got to see a doctor. The doctor did not examined them and just said that they were fine.
