They refused to perform surgery

To ensure some anonymity within the following report, the respondent requested to leave out details about the exact location of the incident.
The respondent is a 30 year-old Syrian. On the 18th of January 2024 he got chased by four police officers right in front of a camp in the south of Serbia. Before there was an incident within a group, that the respondent was not involved in, but the police had assumed him to be. They were running after him and beating him with a stick. When trying to flee the situation and running away, the respondent fell with his head on a stone and broke his skull. He needed to see a doctor and the police forced him to say that they had nothing to do with it. The closest health center said that they can not do the surgery and sent him to another city. There the doctor claimed that the skull has large fractures, and the guy should be transferred to a bigger hospital in Belgrade, because they are more specialized and have better equipment. When they called the hospital in Belgrade, they refused to perform the surgery, because of the person not having a health insurance. Therefore, the doctor in the smaller hospital decided to perform the surgery on his head and luckily it went well. The respondent was hospitalised for 10 days, without being able to call his family because he lost his phone on the attempt of running away in front of the camp. After leaving the hospital he was brought to a camp, where he is staying until now.
