“They said: give us money and we let you go”
The respondent is a 27 year old an from Algeria. At the time of the incident he was together with two friends: a Moroccan and an Algerian man. On July 2 between 21:00 and 5:00 they attempted to enter Serbia in the southern part of the Serbian-Bulgarian border.
About five kilometers into Serbia they were intercepted by the police. They saw three police cars, each containing 3 officers. The respondent couldn’t clearly see their uniform in the dark, however he mentions that they were mostly speaking Serbian with one officer translating into English. Overall he described their behavior as aggressive, although not directly violent. The police also demanded that the group gives away the money that they had: “They [the police] said give us money and we let you go”. However, the group didn’t have any money on them, so they were loaded into cars and taken back to the border. There they were made to walk across back to Bulgaria.
