The main respondent is a 23-year-old man from Afghanistan. According to the respondent he was part of a transit group together with a 23-year-old man and a 17-year-old minor. He reports that the transit group made 9 attempts to cross the Bosnian-Croatian border over a 1-month period, approximately between October and November 2023. According to the respondent, on November 10th, the transit group was crossing Croatia, traveling by train from northeast (Zagreb) to northwest (Rijeka). He reports that, at approximately 3:00 p.m., two uniformed men boarded the train in Ogulin and conducted document checks. The respondent identifies them as Croatian National Police by describing the blue colour of the uniform and the label on it. According to the respondent, the members of the transit group did not have documents as they had been previously confiscated in an attempt to cross the border.
Therefore, he states, they were asked to get off the train. The respondent reports that they were then loaded into a vehicle described as a police car and taken to the police station in Vrbovsko. As the respondent states, they were detained for 6 days to obtain their fingerprints, as they were unwilling to provide them. According to the respondent, they were deprived of adequate meals and limited access to water, receiving only one meal and water once a day. The respondent describes this treatment as ‘torture’, using his own words, thereby providing a clear explanation of the subjective perception of the experience. According to the respondent, they were released only after providing biometric fingerprints on November 15th and received a registration certificate confirming their status as asylum seekers. The respondent shows the document released at the Police Station in Vrbovsko.
