The main respondent is a 23-year-old man from Afghanistan. According to the respondent, on November 6th, he crossed the border from Bosnia to Croatia with a 17-year-old minor and a 20-year-old man, both of whom are Afghans. The respondent reports that, upon reaching the Slunj area in Croatia around 4 pm, they were apprehended by a man and a woman wearing grey-blue uniforms, identified as Croatian Police officers. Later, two additional male officers joined. The respondent describes the color of the uniforms as grey-blue, commonly associated with either regular or criminal police forces.
The respondent recalls that one of the officers fired two shots into the air. Subsequently, he states that the police pointed their guns at them, shouted orders, and forcibly seized their phones before compelling them to kneel on the floor. At this point, the respondent states that the police resorted to physical violence, subjecting them to kicks and beatings with batons on their backs and legs. The respondent describes the four police officers loading them into a van: “They threw us into the van with great disrespect.”. They were all driven back to the border with Bosnia, where they were dropped off in an area pinpointed by the respondent between Sturlic and Trzacka Rastela. According to the respondent’s testimony, the police gathered two more groups at the same location. These new groups consisted of one family unit of three individuals and another with two members, including women.
Additionally, the officers reportedly damaged their phones by splitting them into two parts and threw them into the water. According to the respondent, all individuals were forcefully thrown into the water and abandoned at that location. The respondent’s testimony emphasizes the brutality of the act with the following words: “they threw us into the water without showing mercy even towards women.”
