The main respondent is a 36-year-old men from Morocco. The respondent reports that on the 31st of December 2023 he crossed the border from Bulgaria to Serbia with a group of 16 people. He claims that the group was caught on the day after at around 3 a.m. in the morning by a group of uniformed men that he describes as Serbian military. According to the respondent, they were apprehended close to the village of Bosilegrad and then taken to a police station.
Once at the police station, the respondent states that the Serbian police counted the people in the group, confiscated their phones and afterwards took them to the forest and left them out there. According to the respondent, the group members lit a fire and spent the night in the woods. The respondent reports that around 7 a.m. in the morning the group members reached again the main road. He reports that they were stopped again by the Serbian military, who handed them to the Serbian police. The respondent states that the Serbian military was wearing green uniforms, while the Serbian police worn blue uniforms. The respondent claims that the authorities took the group members to the border and handed them to the Bulgarian military, which then handed them to the Bulgarian police. He reports that they were taken to a police station, where the Bulgarian police insulted him and asked him to sign a paper. The respondent states that he could not understand the document, because it was only in Bulgarian and there was no translator present. The respondent recalls the police giving them food, water and allowing them to go to the toilet. According to the respondent, some of the group members were taken to the detention centre in Busmantsi, while he was able to go back to Svilengrad.
