The main respondent is a 32-year-old man from Morocco. According to the respondent, he was traveling with a group of 7 other Moroccan men, aged between 32 and 37. According to him, on Friday, December 15th, the transit group was apprehended in Croatia and then returned to Šturlić, a village in northwest Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the Croatian border. The respondent reports that the group was initially in Slunj, a location within Croatian territory when the group was stopped by six men wearing black uniforms. The description provided by the respondent matches with the uniforms usually worn by the Croatian Interventna Policija. The respondent clarifies that, after their apprehension, the group was transported back to a valley near Šturlić and handed over to another group of police officers.
The respondent describes being kept on the ground until a white van, without any insignia, was called. Two men in civilian clothes, not wearing uniforms, were driving the van. The respondent states that this two men were undercover police officers. The respondent states that “They took us to an unknown place, where we were detained for about ten minutes”. Additionally, he reports that the police officers confiscated the phones from the individuals in the transit group. He states that the group was then deprived of their clothes and belongings. According to the respondent, the officers set fire to the clothes and threw the phones into the valley separating Bosnia from Croatia. The respondent reports that the police officers proceeded to physically mistreat them, showing a wound on their back. “I was being beaten with batons, and there was a rock in front of me. He pushed me onto it, and I fell on top of the rock”. The respondent recalls that during the beating they were verbally abused with an offensive language: “Fuck you! Fuck you!”. The respondent reports that, after that, they were pushed into the valley to cross the border. The respondent explains that the river, flowing through the valley, serves as the actual border. According to the respondent, they were kicked into the river and forced into the water with kicks. The water level was chest high, according to the respondent. He recalls being forced to walk in the water for about three minutes.
